OH WONDER CALLIGRAPHY WORKSHOP
Last week I hopped on a train after work to go into Greenwich to attend a Modern Calligraphy workshop. The class was held in the Trafalgar Tavern overlooking the Thames, and run by the lovely Lauren of Oh Wonder Calligraphy.
This was the first workshop I've attended since graduating 3 years ago, and I haven't attempted any calligraphy since I was in primary school! So I wasn't sure what to expect and a little nervous that I'd be terrible at it (it turned out I wasn't terrible, but I wasn't too great either!) I had such a lovely evening learning a new skill. Lauren explained everything brilliantly and spent time with each of us individually, helping out with any issues we were having.
We started with some practise drills, drawing the same patterns over and over again to get the hang of how to use the nib properly. Then we moved on to the A B Cs. I only got as far as G on my practice sheets because I spent too much time staring at what I'd done and being critical of it! While I was still on the Bs, I could hear everyone else starting moan about how difficult capital Ds were proving... when I got to that point a little later on I could definitely see why! Much more practice is needed on that one.
We came away with a lovely little starter kit to carry on practising at home, and Lauren had some additional materials for us to purchase too. I treated myself to a lovely pot of gold ink (which Lauren makes herself! You can buy lots of lovely colours on her website) and an extra pad of paper.
I'd definitely recommend attending one of Lauren's workshops, it was uh an enjoyable evening. She has another one scheduled on 7th May, and you can buy a ticket here.
Do you have any recommendations for some workshops to attend? I'd love to learn some more new skills :)
